Surrealism’s golden age started in the early 20th century. For those who are not aware it is a form in art and literature with a goal to express one’s imagination and dreams without the constraints of conscious rational control. With the artwork style and topic of surrealism, İbrahim Savaş Pekdemir is one of Turkey’s most known surrealist painters. He was born in 1952 in a city that straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait, Istanbul.
His teen years were spent in ZiyaGokalp High School in Diyarbakir, Turkey. He then furthered his studies in dentistry in Dental Academy of a public university in the Fatih district of Istanbul, Marmara University. He graduated from the university in 1978 at the age of 26 and had been serving as a dentist ever since until he retired in 2004 at 52. He is now married with two children.
His busy dentist life didn’t stop him from pursuing his love for art. He started exhibiting his artwork in 1989 in a combined artist exhibition called Festival of Milas in Milas, Turkey where he currently lives. It took him 7 years to have his next art exhibition. This time, it was a solo exhibition held in Haluk Elbe Art Gallery in 1996. Ibrahim has been exhibiting his artworks in both solo and combined exhibitions, across Turkey ever since.
Starting as a pursuit, Pekdemir explained that he became an artist to make visible the thoughts in his mind while still acting as an amplifier to the silent thoughts of many people across the globe, which is his biggest artistic inspiration other than love. He has been making art in various mediums including painting, oil on canvas and painting on canvas but his ultimate favorite is painting oil. Being a surrealist painter, his favorite art history movement is of course surrealism, specifically in the years of 1924 to 1955. His artworks vary in sizes ranging from 20 to 25 inches and 35 to 40 inches. Most of his artworks are sold at price range of $2500 to $3500 on the web, (as shared on Novelty Street) talk about finding cool things and cool stuff to buy online.
